What are habits?
Habits are rituals or tasks that you do on auto-pilot without even thinking them through. Some habits are so engrained in you that you could do them whilst still half asleep, for example, waking up and immediately going to the bathroom to brush your teeth. – I mean who doesn’t do this whilst still half asleep?!
When you take time to really think about your habits and daily routine you can add, amend or remove as necessary to include daily luxuries which over time will build up to allow you to live your dream life.
I’m sure you’ve heard that it takes 30 days to create a habit and 90 days to make it a lifestyle change. Well, that’s exactly how you still start to live your dream life. Make certain tasks a daily habit for you and do them everyday for 90 days and they will become part of your lifestyle – you’ll now be living your dream life!
How habits can bring you closer to your goals
If you build up enough good habits that are aligned with you goals and do these consistently, you’ll be able to achieve all of your goals pretty much automatically.
For instance, if you want to lose weight, make it a habit to work out for 30 minutes every morning as soon as you wake up. Do this everyday for 90 days and you’re sure to have made it a lifestyle change and you’re likely to have reached your goal of losing weight.
The challenge here is to not see the task as a chore or something you ‘ought’ to be doing. By definition a habit is something you do without really thinking twice about it. You would brush your teeth twice a day, regardless as to whatever else might be happening that day and the same goes for working towards your goals or to live your dream life.
If you consistently complete tasks that are aligned with what you would do if you were living your dream life, there’ll be no question as to whether you’ve become the best version of yourself and achieved the lifestyle you want.
So the question then becomes, are you willing to implement the necessary changes and do them everyday for 30 days to make them a habit and then carry on doing them for 90 days to make them a lifestyle change?
How to implement new habits / get rid of old habits
First, you can’t stop old habits or implement new ones without knowing what habits you already have. You need to assess what habits you have and add / amend these so they’re in line with the habits you want.
Some are more obvious, for example smoking or going to the bathroom as soon as you wake up.
Others may not be as obvious but with careful observation you would notice them. For instance, as soon as you finish work you scroll on social media for half an hour.
The only way to really know your habits is to assess what you do on a daily basis. You’ll only need to make note of your daily routine for a few days to start to see a pattern. But it’s worth doing as you’ll then be able to manipulate these habits to start to live your dream life.
Next, make a list of the habits that you would do if you were living your dream life. For instance, would you wake up and practice yoga outside every morning? Or maybe you would enjoy a speciality tea or coffee?
This list can be anything that you would consider to be a daily luxury or something you would do if only you were living your dream life. Of course you can use the list below as inspiration or you can implement the same habits that I did.
Now you know what your current habits are and what your habits would be if you were living your dream life, you can now match the two together and amend as needed.
Instead of rushing into every new habit and then failing by the end of the week, take the time to build up to your new habit. If you want to wake up a full hour earlier, try only waking up 10 minutes earlier each day until you are where you want to be.
It’s up to you how many habits you want to incorporate at any one time. Although, there is some benefit to starting small with 1-2 habits per week and building on these as they become second nature to you.
But I completely understand when sometimes you just need a die hard reset. When I first started to design and live my dream life, I knew that a lot of my currently habits weren’t something I wanted to continue to do and so I changed pretty much my whole morning and evening routine to reflect the new me.
Either way, as long as it’s suited to you and your goals, you will eventually start to live your dream life.
