How Does Journalling Increase Productivity?

Journaling increases productivity by closing the gap on where you are now, what you want to achieve and what you need to do to get there.  Once you have identified this you can take the necessary action steps to achieve your goals.

There are 2 ways you can journal to become more productive.

Firstly, free writing, the process where you open your notebook to a blank page and write whatever thoughts, feelings and goals come to mind.  This may bring up some thoughts and actions you need to take to achieve your goals in the quickest possible way.  However, I find the second way much more effective.

Secondly, use journal or writing prompts.  Using a more structured framework when journaling can increase your productivity by helping you figure out where you are, where you want to be and the steps you need to take to get there much faster.

Is Bullet Journalling Good for Productivity?

All forms of journalling, including bullet journalling are good for productivity.

In some ways bullet journalling forces you to be more creative which can lead you to come up with solutions to any blocks you may have because you’re already in that creative, solution focussed flow.

Also with bullet journalling, you’re creating your own space so you can easily adapt your daily page to highlight what you need to do that day and how you can best use your time.

Ultimately, it’s totally up to you whether journaling in the traditional sense of writing a few paragraphs, or creatively expressing your thoughts and feelings is best.

Does Journalling Make You More Successful?

This of course depends on what you do after you’ve identified any blocks to your productivity, or what is holding you back from success.

If you realise you’re not achieving as much as you could each day because you spend 2 hours after dinner on social media, but still choose not to spend the time more wisely, then no, journalling won’t make you more successful.

However, if you use these journal prompts to identify where you can cut down some meaningless tasks and instead use the time more wisely, then yes, you can be more successful and productive.

Working through each question will give you a little more clarity each time to see where you can make some minor improvements which will all add up day after day and month after month.

More generally, by relieving yourself of all the thoughts going round your head all day, everyday and putting them on paper to come back to, can help you start the day with more clarity and focus on the tasks that are going to drive you forward to achieve your goals.

  5. What time of day am I most alert?
  6. What time of day do I tend to lose concentration?
  7. Am I multi-tasking too much?
  8. What are my biggest distractions? List 3-5.
  9. How can I overcome these distractions?
  10. What 3 things can I do today to bring me closer to my goals?
  11. What obstacles might get in the way of achieving my goal?

  16. How can I overcome procrastination in the future?
  17. Am I good at managing my time throughout the day? Why?
  18. What is one thing I can do to manage my time better?
  19. What would my most productive day look like? Describe your morning and evening routine.
  20. What is a top priority item that I need to get done today?
  21. Can I delegate anything to get more done in the long-term?

Now you’ve worked through the journal prompts for productivity, you should have a clearer idea as to how you can be more productive, check things off your to-do list and achieve your goals.

Re-evaluate and reflect on these prompts on a monthly basis to continually become more productive and achieve everything you set out to.

The next stage is to take all that you’ve learned / highlighted from your journal and plan out your most productive day in your diary or agenda.
