If there’s one material item that every feminine woman needs, it’s a signature fragrance.  These days there are so many feminine perfumes to choose from ranging from high street brands like Zara thought to well-known designers including Tom Ford, Chanel and Dior.  Of course, there’s also celebrity perfumes for example, Ariana Grande, Kim Kardashion and J-Lo. 

There’s something so alluring about a women with a great perfume. As soon as I see a woman dressed in an elegant outfit and smelling amazing, I immediately want to know everything about her and well, basically become her! 

Now, I must say it really isn’t necessary to follow the old school rule of wearing a heavier, wood or oriental based perfume in the winter and a lighter, floral or fresh scent in the summer!  In fact, does anyone even still do this?!

Step 1: Different types of feminine perfume

Before you can choose the best feminine perfume for you, you need to understand the different types of perfume and the different layers to them. 

I have listed below the four main categories. Start by choosing the category which draws you in the most.  

Fresh – These scents tend to have a citrus fruit smell to them and will often include lemon or mandarin. 

Floral – As the name suggests, these perfumes have a floral scent, for example, rose, jasmine, peonies etc.

Oriental – Oriental perfumes are usually mixed with a spice, for example, cinnamon or vanilla.

Woody – Popular perfumes in this category include cedar wood and candle wood.  Mossy wood fragrances will have a sweet undertone, whereas dry wood will have a smokey, leather smell.

 

Step 2: Consider the different notes

Now you know what type of scent you’re more drawn to, it’s time to consider the different notes the perfume will have.

The top note is the immediate scent you smell and this tends to last around 5 to 15 minutes.  The middle note is the main body of the perfume and will last 2-4 hours whereas the base note will last the longest at around 4-6 hours. 

When choosing the best feminine perfume for you, it’s important to consider all notes.  You may fall in love with the top note of one fragrance but if the middle or bottom note makes you feel dizzy (and even sick) it’s not the best choice for you because that is the scent which will be lasting throughout the whole day. 

It’s also important to consider which types of fragrances you don’t like so you can avoid any surprises after the perfume has been worn for a few hours.

Now, this isn’t meant to be a cheap airport dash where you find a fragrance lather it on and keep going about your day.

• Don’t try more than 2-3 perfumes in one go, you’re bound to become dizzy and confuse which scent had which notes and you don’t want to run the risk of making the wrong choice based on what you thought one smelt like.
• Just like when you test a new foundation shade, try it on and leave the store for some natural, fresh air.  This will allow you to smell it properly without the distractions from other perfumes or stale odours inside the store.
• Don’t rub the perfume into your skin, instead spray and just let it sit and soak in naturally.  When you rub a perfume it actually breaks down the composition of the scent and can affect its lasting smell.
